Let’s be real for a moment… No one was given a guidebook for how to be the perfect parent to the exact child/children we have been entrusted with. We are all learning as we go… and becoming better equipped as we work through the daily struggles to set aside *ourselves* in order to be fully engaged as parents, fully invested in our children’s interests, and fully responsible for the spiritual battles that arise in parenthood.

Many of our battles are thousands of years old, and many of the lies we hear have already been defeated and exposed by Jesus. In this journey towards parenting perfection, we can find relief in the truth of who we are because of WHOSE we are, and WHO it is that equips us to face our everyday challenges.

Parents are Biblically called to stand in the gap for their children, being “shepherds of the flock under their care, watching over them – not because we must, but because we are willing, as God wants us to be…” (1 Peter 5:2-3).

In the book, Un-Adoptable? Faith Beyond Foster Care, I ask foster and potential adoptive parents, are you willing to go beyond yourself? Are you willing to take on the burdens and believe and petition on the behalf of someone else… knowing that God will equip you and be with you as you take on that extra responsibility?

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine. (God is so personal!) When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. Rivers shall not overflow you and fire will not burn you… NOT because of who YOU are… but because of who I AM. (Paraphrased from Isaiah 43:1-3)

Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord?? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say. (Paraphrased from Exodus 4: 10-13)

The boy’s father asked Jesus, “…If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” Jesus replied with “‘If you can’?” (I feel like there was a “come on” or “puh-lease” to go with that) He said, “Everything is possible for one who believes,” and the boy’s father responded, “I do believe; help me with my unbelief!” (Paraphrased from Mark 9: 21-23)
